The Award is a nationally recognised
accreditation that is open to all young people between 14 and 25. Many
young people access it through school or a voluntary organisation
(e.g.,
Scouts, Girls' Brigade or a cadet force). Many local councils
run Open Award Centres alongside youth clubs.

| Home-educated young people who do not belong to a voluntary organisation
may find it difficult to access the Award but a number of local EHE
support groups are starting to provide access. You do not need a group
that meets regularly to do the Award – only the expedition needs
to be carried out as part of a team. |
The key principles of the Award are that it is:
you challenge yourself rather than competing with others |
you are only restricted by age |
you must make a choice to take part |
you design your own programme and take as long as you wish to complete
a level |
you do an activity in each of four Sections: Skill,
Service, Physical Recreation, Expedition |
you need more commitment and responsibility for each level |
you achieve the Award when you fulfil your own
goals |
you cannot complete the Award in a short burst of
enthusiasm –Bronze takes at least 6 months |
you learn new skills and grow in confidence and ability |
you should find it enjoyable and satisfying |
To abide by these principles, you may not count any activity
for which you are paid or for which you gain academic credit. Additional,
voluntary effort that is related to work or a course can be accredited
as long as it is carried out in your own time and you can set goals that
show that you are progressing.
